FREE Genealogy Book Contest
One of my readers is going to win a new FREE Family Tree Magazine Genealogy Book valued at $16.99 just for leaving a genealogy or history related comment of at least 16 words on this post. Writing about the book contest on your blog would be very nice too, but does not guarantee a prize. Just my heartfelt gratitude.
If that winner is also an Entrecard Member he or she will also win 200 EC credits. (It’s up to the winner to let me know if you are using EC so I can award the credits).
Here are the details:
- Contest will run from midnight March 23 to midnight March 31, 2009
- Only open to people with a U. S. address
- The winner will be chosen randomly by me using Randomizer.org and will have 7 days from notification to reply to me with their postal address. If I don’t get a reply then a new winner will be chosen using the same method.
To avoid controversy, etc., this contest is not open to my family members.
Good Luck!!

I love genealogy. I am actually currently creating a genealogy book for my uncle’s birthday. While the focus isn’t on all of the records I’ve found, it is still a great resource. The focus is on the stories I’ve collected over the years so that the ancestors who may have been several years back, or that he may have only met a few times, come to life. I want my ancestors to be more than just a paper trail – they were real people. I want them to come to life.

I would love to win the book, but I love genealogy anyway. I started researching my family last summer and found we were directly related to among others, Alexander Hamilton. It’s fascinating. Each bit that’s uncovered leads to finding another.
I don’t know what the book is but I love anything that is free. If you put the word free and genealogy together I am in seventh heaven. I eat, sleep and breath genealogy. Glad I saw the notice about the contest, otherwise I would never of discovered your blog. I am also another fibromyalgia sufferer.

My experience with genealogy is limited to a handful of visits to websites, visits to the Family History Museum in Salt Lake City, and putting together pedigree charts with my mother. I also own a few family history and genealogy books that are specifically about my ancestors. I do love free stuff, but I am most interested in free meaningful stuff.

I predict that especially after the U.S. premiere of Who Do You Think You Are on April 20, 2009 on NBC, more and more people will be interested in tracing their roots and genealogy.

Genealogy is a topic I’ve been giving a lot of thought to since I had my twins and starting a family makes you think of these things. My mom is 1/3 Native American my grandmother is 1/3 Caucasion (of who knows what decent) her husband African-America, and so on. We’re black and of varying skin colors, hair types–I even have blue-eyed cousins…… it’s just funny to see all these physical traits showing up in the kids (and myself) and makes me wonder what would show up if someone traced our lineage. I’m sure we’d be the all-american melting pot!!!
Don’t even get me started on what the family tree would look like…. Hope I win.
If I win the book, I’ll review it on my blog Crowe’s Nest (blog.epcrowe.com), which is about genealogy, online research techniques, DNA, writing, my family, and ancestors I like, and lots of other stuff. Then, I’ll donate it to the Navarre Public LIbrary, so even more people can enjoy this madness that is genealogy!!
I’m a newbie to the genealogy game, but would love be able to have a nice way of presenting what i’ve found. The coolest thing I’ve found is that one ancestor was the blacksmith for George Washington during the Rev. War. The most infamous thing is that George Kandel is related to me, and was the first person in america to recieve the death penalty

I am currently trying to keep up with the stream of emails from second, third and fourth of every type of removed cousins who are getting quite interested in my genealogical research. I hope to keep them interested by putting it online for them to understand and continually find more information to post. Hopefully if I win the book it will help with one or both of those goals:-)
Recently I’ve become more interested in genealogy because my wife and I have been using dynastree.com and getting all of our relatives to at least try it out. So far, we’ve got at least 120 relatives listed, but it doesn’t go back very far. I’m hoping to get at least dates and everything for 3-4 generations back.
Oh well, I hope whoever gets the book puts it to good use.
Cheers

I would love to win the Family History book. It would be a great review for the genealogy site for Bellaonline. But, mainly, for my own personal use. I love writing and documenting facts about my family. I spend so much time working on other family’s names, that it is a rare treasure when I can really get down and dig on my own family. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to win something genealogy related. Makes me try to think of things I have to do somethihg similar. You might have started a great trend… Tina Sansone (Gtownma)

I can’t wait to see who wins the random drawing! It’s obvious you all love family and/or genealogy in some way. Just like I do!
I found the rest of the story of my Mr. Plemons and can’t wait to post it as a follow-up to yesterday’s “Monday Madness” at Tennessee Memories. The death and subsequent trial was written about in a local Knoxville Newspaper. And the reason the strange epitaph was inscribed on poor Mr. Plemons’ gravestone is revealed by family members.
I love the idea of your contest, Carol.

How fun! Genealogy is one of those unexplainable obsessions that you seem to be born with. It makes no logical sense but you are just drawn to continuing the search.

In response to Tom’s post about the US premiere of “Who Do You Think You Are,” I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the latest series from the UK, and think that it’s something of a step up from previous ones. The producers have made a good effort at going beyond the mere nuts and bolts, sorry names and dates, to present an intriguing story about the lives and times of the ancestors of the particular celebrity being featured that week. At the end of each episode, I am left with the feeling that I want to go online and see if there’s anything more I can find out … and then I remember how much there is to discover about my own ancestors! There was a similar series on NZ television a couple of years ago, but it wasn’t nearly as well researched or presented. I hope the US version fulfils expectations. Regards, Brett

I think that is what has always lured me into genealogy Brett. After seeing someone else’s history and how they fit into this big ol’ world, I wanted to know where I came from and who my ancestors were. Besides, it helps that I’m very nosy.
Several years ago I took on the project of creating a database of all the burials in our local cemetery. I became very interested in these eople although none are my relatives and decided to collect the obituaries of all 1700 people in the cemetery – a big job – but a labor of love in the hope that I can help others discover their own ancestors. I love genealogy and there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all I want to do.
