As I was writing the previous post about remote computer control using Proxy Pro 7, it occurred to me that even the genealogist or businessperson could make use of this software if it was cost-effective for them.
There are times when I’ve been asked ‘how do I…?” by someone using my genealogy program and if they’re not familiar with the program itself, or the verbiage used in conjunction with computers (or both) it can be very frustrating to explain what to do. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to just be able to remotely access their computer (perhaps while you have them on the phone) and “show” them what they need to do. I don’t know about you, but someone just telling me something may not be enough. I have to see it!
Granted, there are other programs for remote access. No matter which program you use you should only allow it or use it if both parties can be trusted. I’ve watched my computer as my son accessed it from California and made quick work of what he deemed to be a routine action, but was a bit too complicated for me.
Have you ever remotely accessed someone else’s computer?
Short Lesson: Uploading and Downloading
Referring back to the comment I made about computer verbiage, one thing I notice that a lot of people find confusing is the difference between uploading and downloading.
Uploading is something you send FROM your computer somewhere else. Just for a mental visual reminder, I like to think of it as my computer sending information to a satellite somewhere up in the sky.
Downloading can be remembered as just the opposite. You are bringing information (files, etc.) down from that ‘satellite’ TO your computer.
