Sentimental Sunday March 28, 2010:  Grandma’s Favorite Cup

Cup And Saucer Set (flat)

Many of my memories are like little vignettes of events that happened once and never again.  One of them is my recollection of a conversation with my Grandma Yates ( Josie McVey Scribner Yates) about one of her favorite coffee cups.  I remember she had it and a matching saucer sitting on her kitchen counter (probably waiting to be filled with hot coffee) and her saying to me “I always wanted to have a farm like that”.

(That’s my mom’s arm around Grandma’s shoulder)

At the time, I thought Grandma was “old”, but she may have been close to the age I am now (and of course, that is not old :) )  Until she told me about the farm, it never occurred to me that she would have any hopes and dreams that never came true.   I was grade school age, so I was still in ‘self-centered’ mode which explains my surprise.  I remember feeling sorry for her that she never got that farm.

Grandma was born in Forsythe, Missouri and soon after, she and her family moved out here to Washington State and lived near Littlerock, Thurston, WA.  She was my dad’s step mother, but that didn’t matter to me, she was always very kind and meek, but I knew never to tangle with her or Grandpa would have my hide.  She was really the only grandmother I knew and I loved her dearly.

  1. Isn’t it amazing what we do remember after our grandparents are gone. My grandmother was just the same, in that she had so many things she wanted to do, but she couldn’t in her situation. She was artistic, collected antiques, just like me, and she loved classical music. I really miss her.

What a sweet story about grandma. I love it when you write things like this so I can remember her too. As I look at her photo I think, “Oh my, I am looking more like her all the time except not grandma-ish”. This photo I can see a lot of my dad and usually I don’t see that. Thank you for sharing your memories!

I was never encouraged to look through the china cupboard until long after Grandma died. When I did, I found that the cup and saucer were not to be found. I was sooooo disappointed because I knew she loved that cup. :( I’d give my *something* to have it again too.
