The Home Friend February 1909 – Front Page
In my last article I gave you the back story on how we came to acquire the 1909 issue of The Home Friend, a newsprint magazine published monthly by The Home Friend Publishing Company, Friend Building, 1423 Virginia Street, Kansas City, Missouri. But there’s more!
On page 16 it lists these names and their positions on the paper: As President is Edwin O. Koch; William M. Ross as Vice President; and J. O. Young as Secretary-Treasurer. John Meagher was the Editor. This must have been a very widespread publication because it also lists a Chicago Office at 112 Dearborn Street, as well as a New York Office at 6017 Metropolitan Building, and a St. Louis, Missouri Office at 3657 Hartford Avenue.
The front page for February 1909 is shown above, and the artist’s name is given as Edwin G. Waskow, a well known artist in his time. I haven’t been able to discover any background on him as I write this, but there are some items for sale on Ebay as well as at Ruby Lane that show some of his other work. In this day and age, with cell phones so ubiquitous, the depiction of the lady on the candlestick phone talking to her beau while cupid listens in is just a charming glimpse into yesteryear. Notice how the wires are shaped into a heart?
Wishing you all a Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow!
