The Value Of Civil War Records In Family History
My friend Brenda Kellow does a column every week called Tracing Our Roots, and this week’s topic is about the Tennessee Confederate Questionairres and their usefulness when it comes to researching your family tree.
My first knowledge of these questionnaires was somewhat of a fluke. A fellow Tennessee researcher very generously sent me a copy of a completed questionnaire belonging to one of my Osgatharp cousins who had served in the war from his home in Clay County, TN. What a goldmine of information was included in that one document! Not only did it give my cousin’s personal information about his war service, but he also told who was in his unit, which in those war years quite often was close relatives from the same county or town.
Additional information was given about the commanding officers, as well as the persons known to have been killed. That former information is easy to verify with other records, but the latter is sometimes not documented at all unless by a comrade that saw him fall in battle.
Brenda’s columns are a wealth of information and inspiration for any genealogist. Please take a few minutes to stop by her site and look at what she has shared with all of us. Thanks Brenda!
