WA State Flood Photos – December 2007

I don’t think New Orleans was much worse than the flooding that is currently inundating western Washington state near Centralia. These pictures were taken just a few days ago, right after the storm. The first two show I-5 at the exit for Centralia and why the freeway south is closed for 20 miles. You will have to click on the thumbnail to get the larger picture.

This next picture speaks volumes to me, but I wonder if it will to you too? Look at the hillside above the slide area. Notice anything missing? Whomever was allowed to clearcut that hillside above those houses should be punished to the full extent of the law. I don’t know who owns the land, but I could hazard some guesses. I didn’t hear of anyone being hurt, but it looks like the house where the slide debris came down is a total loss.

Marc’s comment from September is erroneously referring to a mine fire that has been burning since the 60′s in Centralia, PENNSYLVANIA, not Washington state as is being discussed in the flood details here! Guess he doesn’t realize there’s more than one Centralia in the world! lol

Hey, thanks for the comment Marc. I had no idea about the mine fire, etc., so your comment gives another viewpoint. Or, I should say, the real story.

That land in Centralia wasn’t clear cut… There is an underground mine fire that has been burning for decades. Odds are that the tree roots were scorched and the trees eventually died. All of em’ are still there. Really eerie place to tell you the truth.

I have no idea what was meant about the bomber going down I-5. LOL Nothing I saw in the news. They wouldn't get far today on the 5, it is closed for 20 miles north and south at Chehalis, much like last year when I wrote this article.

In range of N. Korea's missiles? Smuggling on I-5? What do they put in the water down there? Maybe they weren't saying you were crazy for living in FL, just crazy.

LOL…oops…guess I forgot to mention Red Tide.

    Naw…no place is safe. :)

And my ex-family thought I was crazy to live in Florida because I’m “not safe” here. Occassional sinkholes, hurricanes (we did have some rain part of one day this year from a hurricane … ooooo…) and Embry Riddle U.
Hmmm…hurricanes with many days advance warning (1), occassional sinkholes, that yes, have no warning (2)….compared to: (1) flooding (2) in range of N Korea’s missles (3) black ice (4) earthquakes (5) tsunami potential from the Ring of Fire (6) on the I-5 corridor for anything being smuggled cross country, including bombers (remember the one who went down I-5 from SeaTac???)…..flooding isn’t uncommon, earthquakes aren’t uncommon, black ice isn’t uncommon…and I had 1/2 day of rain that I knew I would get….Think I’ll stay were I”m “not” safe……. At least with the worst we get, hurricanes, you have time to prepare, know what to do, and in reality, not as many get clobbered as it may seem.

Ghastly. I grew up in Snohomish Valley, near Sultan in the 1990s and experienced two horrid floods. The logging industry should be held more accountable for the environmental damage.
